Dear Premier Christy Clark,

Approximately  80% of British Columbians and all Coastal First Nations are needing you to bring an end to the shameful act of trophy hunting bears in this province.

Each spring and fall your government opens a legal trophy hunt of bears.  This sport kills the genetically distinct Haida black bear, the coastal black bear  that possesses  the recessive gene which produces the iconic rare white Spirit bear and the threatened grizzly bear.

Bears are sentient, intelligent animals and should not be killed indiscriminately as trophies for a hunter’s wall or hallway. This is a sport that brings shame on your government, province and all it’s citizens.

Trophy hunting poses a direct economic threat to the rapidly growing wildlife viewing industry which generates far more income for rural communities than trophy hunting.  It makes no economic, ethical or rational sense for your government to continue this ‘sport’ for a small number of sport hunters who want to kill vulnerable grizzlies and black bears for entertainment over the will of the vast majority of your citizens who want to see ethical leadership and common sense prevail.

Please do the right thing and put an end to this unsportsmanlike, gratuitous killing that is misnamed a ‘sport.’

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

your name here

Writing Letters to Local and National Newspapers

Writing letters to newspapers is extremely helpful. Newspaper editors, like politicians, need to know what people are thinking about regarding the issues around the trophy hunting of bears in B.C.  The editorial section is often the first page politicians turn to.

Remember: Keep your letter short and to the point – less than 150 words is preferable.  Your letter should carry its most important message in the first few sentences. Make your letter timely –  you may have just returned from a trip to a wilderness area of B.C. or are reacting to a previous story in the paper. Include contact information so that you can be reached during the day and the evening. Don’t be afraid to tell readers what you want them to do - this is your chance to speak your mind.
